Several hotels in Los Angeles County are currently under investigation for allegedly replacing workers on strike with illegal immigrants.
LA County District Attorney George Gascon announced the investigation in a news conference held in front of the Le Meridien Delfina Santa Monica. The hotel and two others – Four Points by Sheraton and Holiday Inn LAX – reportedly hired unlawful border crossers instead of working out a deal with striking employees.
Unite Here Local 11 Union, a group of more than 15,000 LA hotel workers on strike since July, disclosed this finding in a report. According to the union, hotels are sourcing new employees staying at the Skid Row Shelter to work as cleaners to replace employees from around 60 accommodations in Southern California who have been striking since July.
A report by the LA Times also backed this claim; the outlet interviewed several migrants from Venezuela and Colombia. The interviewees disclosed having to endure long hours with heavy workloads and inadequate breaks.
Minors were also reportedly hired under this scheme, with one 17-year-old high school student skipping school to work with his mother as housekeepers at the Holiday Inn LAX. The student and his mother were reportedly paid by an agency called Arya Staffing Services.
“We are going to make sure this is investigated thoroughly; it will be a fair and impartial investigation,” Gascon said during the press conference. “If there are violations of the law, there will be severe consequences for this. We want to make sure that our community understands [that] there will be no tolerance for the exploitation of refugees.”
The LA Times said: “Hotel housekeepers, front desk workers, cooks and other employees are seeking new contracts with higher wages and improved benefits and working conditions. The union members say they don’t earn enough to afford housing near their jobs. But hotel operators say the union is overreaching in its demands for raises.”
According to the Daily Mail, illegals are prohibited to work until 150 days after they pass their asylum claims. However, the Biden administration has granted illegal aliens from Venezuela work permits and temporary protected status while on American soil. Once approved, illegals can work in the country – allowing employers to hire them in case of labor strikes.
But several groups condemned the hotels’ use of so-called “scab labor.”
Angelica Salas, the executive director of the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights Los Angeles, strongly condemned the practices and called them “indefensible.” She remarked: “Staffing agencies, companies taking advantage of the desperation of the individual to try to begin their life, and then not paying them their proper earnings, not giving them a full accounting of their hours worked—we see this every day here in LA.”
Unite Here Local 11 Co-President Kurt Petersen said employers who hired migrants in place of workers on strike have taken advantage of vulnerable workers to hurt their employees fighting for fair wages.
“I can’t believe they are forcing these people who are so desperate to cross the picket line,” he commented. “Instead of addressing LA’s housing crisis, the hotel industry prefers to exploit the unhoused as strikebreakers to avoid paying their own workers enough to afford housing themselves.”
